2024, Huizhou Association celebrated its 160th anniversary.

History of the Huizhou Association of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur
1864 - 1911
The Huizhou Association of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur was founded in1864At that time, the late Kapitan Yap Ah Loy founded the "Huizhou Company" on the banks of the Klang River in present-day Loya Street, Kuala Lumpur, as a place for fellow countrymen who came from the south to open up new land to rest.1868It later moved to its current location in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur.
As more and more people from the same hometown came to the south, and the young children needed to be educated,1884A private school was set up in the guild hall, and Mr. Ye Shugang, a tutor from Huizhou, was hired to be in charge of teaching.
April 1885After the unfortunate death of Kapitan Yap Ah Loy, the late Yap Chi Ying succeeded him as the Chinese Kapitan. Yap, his son-in-law Xiao Bangrong and the late Yap Chi Liang led the Association and rebuilt the original simple clubhouse into a magnificent Chinese-style building with carved beams and painted rafters. They also invited the Beijing Imperial Censor Deng Chengxiu to write a plaque with the words "Huizhou Guild Hall" and hang it on the door of the hall.
1895In 1998, our association co-founded the Guangdong Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur with the Guangdong-Chaozhou Association, Jiaying Association, Hainan Association, Teochew Association and Chayang Association to provide a burial place for the ancestors of Guangdong people so that the deceased can rest in peace.
1911After the success of the Xinhai Revolution in China, the new-style education was promoted in China, and the education cause of overseas Chinese was also deeply influenced and followed suit. In 1913, the private school of our association was changed into a new-style primary school and named "Xunren School" to show the meaning of remembering the source of water and inheriting the past and opening up the future. Because Huizhou was under the jurisdiction of various counties, it was established as Nanhai County in the Han Dynasty, and was renamed Xunzhou Prefecture in the Sui and Tang Dynasties. It was renamed Huizhou Prefecture in the fourth year of Tianxi in the reign of Emperor Zhenzong of the Song Dynasty.
The purpose of the association has expanded with the needs of the times. In addition to providing rest and employment for fellow villagers in the early days, it also mediates disputes among fellow villagers, cares for poor and sick fellow villagers, strengthens unity, establishes a general cemetery, holds spring and autumn sacrifices to commemorate the ancestors, and subsidizes fellow villagers' welfare and education.
1930 - 1940
1930sDuring this period, the world was experiencing an economic recession, and our country's industry and tin mining industries were hit hard. There were many unemployed people and people were living in misery. Our association launched a porridge charity to save the people from suffering.
1935to1937During the 1980s, our predecessor, Mr. Qiu Mangong, was leading our association. At that time, the government sent a letter to requisition our headquarters under the pretext of a city improvement plan. Our association convened a special general meeting of members to seek a solution. On the day of the special general meeting, our president, Mr. Qiu Mangong, was away from home, and our vice president, Mr. Xiao Mangong, was absent due to personal matters. Therefore, the general affairs officer, Mr. Zhan Hanchang, presided over the meeting. At the meeting, it was passed to reimburse the government $3,000, and Mr. Qiu Mangong, the president, signed to replace the old Yalan with the new Yalan to comply with the government's land laws. (The $3,000 to be reimbursed to the government was paid by Mr. Qiu Mangong, the president, because our association had no savings, and the association will gradually repay it in the future.)
In those days, disputes between fellow townsmen were mostly mediated by Mr. Zhan Hanchang and Mr. Liu Nanji, and the results were translated into English by Mr. Huang Wenbao and reported to the Chinese Affairs Department for filing. Mr. Qiu Mangong, the Taiping Bureau official, and Mr. Xiao Mangong were recommended to serve as jurors of the Chinese Affairs Department to hear disputes between the Chinese.
1938, the president of the association was the late Mr. Huang Bocai. At that time, the association had about 400 members from the same hometown. At that time, Kuala Lumpur's business was already quite developed, and there was a high demand for shops. Mr. Huang suggested rebuilding the association's building into a commercial, office and accommodation building, which would not only benefit the industry and commerce, but also increase the income of the association. Mr. Huang's suggestion received enthusiastic support from the executive members and members from the same hometown, and a construction committee headed by Mr. Qiu Mangong, the Taiping Bureau official, was established.April 1939The building construction cost a total of $100,000. The building cost was secured by the building title deed of the association through an overdraft from Guangyi Bank, and the four-storey building was finally completed.
1940In the late 19th century, Japan launched a war of aggression against China, causing many places to be devastated by war, with mountains and rivers broken, farmlands and houses destroyed, people displaced, and many innocent people killed. Overseas Chinese were very excited and donated money to save the country. Some even went to the battlefield to help defend their country.
At that time, our presidents, Mr. Huang Bocai and Mr. Guan Wensen, saw the situation as urgent and felt obliged to contribute money and effort. In addition to donating money, they also organized a national salvation army to protect their hometowns and went to their hometowns to assist in the anti-Japanese war. Many young members of our association who were full of enthusiasm and not afraid of sacrifice, including Qiu Lin, Ye Zhiqiang, Ye Qisi, Huang Weiran, Qiu Jinqing, Ye Xinyuan, Deng Huaiji, Wang Chunhong (female) and more than 90 fellow villagers, joined the national salvation army with the help of our fellow villagers Huang Bocai and Guan Wensen, returned to their hometowns, and participated in the anti-Japanese war.
When the Japanese invaded our hometown, the National Salvation Army fought bravely and dealt a heavy blow to the Japanese, but also suffered heavy casualties. On the other hand, the Japanese saw that the results were not favorable, so they changed their strategy and invaded Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia (then called Malaya), which evolved into the Second World War. At that time, the National Salvation Army assisted in defending their homeland in their hometown and fought to the death, while our fellow countrymen participated in the anti-Japanese resistance in the local area, resisting the invasion until they achieved a glorious victory, bringing world peace and allowing people to live and work in peace again. Their achievements have been recorded in history forever, and our association is proud to have such brave members.
August 31, 1957
The Federation of Malaya alsoAugust 31, 1957Independence was declared. In response to the changing times, many of our members became naturalized citizens, pledged loyalty to our country's supreme leader, and worked with people of all ethnic groups to build the country; and the heroes who returned to their hometowns to fight the war mostly stayed there after the war, helping to rebuild their homes and improve the lives of their fellow countrymen, making great contributions.
During the Japanese occupation, members of the Overseas Chinese Association took advantage of the Japanese power to occupy our building and demolished the walls to operate a casino. The then president of our association, Mr. Ye Fu, could not stand such barbaric behavior and argued for the return of the building and compensation for losses. In order to restore social order and maintain public security, the Japanese army banned public gambling, and the ownership of our building was finally taken back.
After the building was taken back, the Association received a notice from the Overseas Chinese Association that it must pay a donation of NT$168,500 within a certain period of time to comfort the Japanese troops. Those who violated the order would be severely punished. The Association was in such a bad situation, because at that time, the Association not only had no money left, but also owed a loan of NT$100,000 to Guangyi Bank (for the construction cost of rebuilding a four-story building). How could it pay the donation? And it could not be perfunctory, it was really a dilemma.
1944 - 1962
In order to rescue the association from its predicament, enthusiastic pioneers Liao Peiru, Li Jingtang and Ye Zhifang organized the Nanhua Company.October 1944FromSeptember 1949The four-storey building of our association was leased for five years, with a monthly rent of NT$2,600. Both parties agreed that Nan Hua Company would prepay the previous rent of NT$96,000 (the remaining NT$1,000 would be paid monthly to our association). In addition, the company donated NT$100,400 to our association, bringing the total income of NT$200,000 to our association. Our association used this amount to pay the subscription fee, and the remaining amount was used to repay part of the loan from Guangyi Bank.
During the Japanese invasion, the temporary school building of Shun Ren Primary School was destroyed by bombing and was forced to close. After the war, the late Mr. Zhu Ronglu led our association and temporarily used the new building of our association as a temporary school building.1946Finally, Huang Bocai donated 20,000 yuan and the Huiqiao Mutual Aid Association donated 10,000 yuan to build eight temporary school buildings on the current site of Lu You Road in Kuala Lumpur.
1952A school construction committee headed by Mr. Li Nanyan was established to raise funds for the school construction. At that time, our president Zhu Ronglu celebrated his 60th birthday. He held a banquet to entertain fellow villagers and friends from all walks of life, and donated all the congratulatory red envelopes totaling more than 10,000 yuan to the Xun School construction fund. A total of more than 300,000 yuan was raised for the school construction fund.1954Twenty classrooms, an auditorium, an office, a library and a science laboratory were built, completing the school construction.
1955, the school added a junior high school.April 1961, the Education Department issued an order that primary and secondary schools could not share school buildings. The board of directors then planned to build a new school building for Xun Primary School and obtained five acres of land allocated by the government in Kampung Bandar, Kuala Lumpur as a school site. Fourteen new classrooms were built within half a year.1962After the establishment of the Xunren Middle School and the elementary and middle schools, both achieved good development under the leadership of their respective wise boards of directors.
1949 - 1961
1949During this period, the government implemented the Societies Act.On January 15, 1954The association was officially approved to register as "Selangor Huizhou Association". Later, Kuala Lumpur was changed to a federal territory and administratively separated from Selangor. In order to keep up with the development of the political situation, the association formally applied to change its name to "Selangor Huizhou Association" andApril 2, 1986Obtain approval from the Registrar of Societies.
In order to help fund the construction of Nanyang University, the Sports Department of our Association held a charity race and raised a total of more than 30,000 yuan in donations, which were all donated as the Nanyang University construction fund.
December 7, 1958, held an annual general meeting of members and passed the proposal proposed by Ms. Li Nanyan to expand the fifth floor for use as an auditorium, office and dormitory.End of January 1961The total construction cost was about NT$80,000, and the internal equipment cost of more than NT$20,000 was donated by enthusiastic members from the same hometown.
1960Since 1998, the Association has promoted the appointment of assistant committee members in each port to serve as a bridge between the Association and the members of the port. They have made great contributions in promoting the Association's activities and liaison work. In the same year, the Executive Committee of the Association was expanded from the original 33 to 51.
July 22, 1961, the Welfare Group of the Association was established, with the purpose of disaster relief, poverty alleviation, post-disaster relief, education and promotion of social welfare. A 15-member committee headed by Mr. Li Nanyan and three audit committee members were elected. Since the establishment of the Welfare Group, due to the correct purpose and the serious work of the directors, the association's affairs have been thriving, and it has won the support of members and fellow countrymen, who have joined as members. Unfortunately,February 26, 1994Received the official registration certificate of the associationFebruary 21, 1994It is a pity that the Registrar of Societies has ordered the Association’s Member Welfare Section to cease its activities because a member reported that the Section had not been registered separately.
1962 - 1975
The Women's Department of our associationDecember 2, 1962The inauguration ceremony was held at 2:00 pm (Sunday), and a 33-member committee headed by Ms. Zhang Zijing was formed. Since its establishment, the Women's Department has made great contributions in promoting the association's activities and social welfare and charity.
1963, the Women's Department of our association founded the Elderly Association, which received widespread support from members and fellow townspeople.1968The grants were first distributed, and in the first year, five children of members who were attending local universities benefited.1973Starting from now, scholarships for university preparatory classes will be added.
In the late 1970s, due to the large number of members, the expenses increased accordingly. The property tax and income tax were greatly increased. Coupled with inflation, the rental income of the association's properties (limited by the rent control law, the rent could not be increased) was not enough to cover the expenses, and the association faced financial difficulties.
1975After the general meeting of members was held for re-election, a group of new blood was injected into the executive committee, and the old, middle-aged and young were combined for collective leadership. In order to solve the economic difficulties of the association, the new chairman Datuk Yap Ping followed the policy of saving money advocated by the predecessor Li Nanyan. When the association celebrated its 111th anniversary, he held a cultural and entertainment evening party, which raised a university loan fund of 100,000 yuan in one fell swoop, providing a financial source for the children of members to further their studies. Other activities such as spring and autumn banquets, respect for the elderly, charity for the poor, relief for fellow townsmen and public welfare and charity are based on the principle of not using the income of the association. All of them are donated or contributed by enthusiastic executives, assistants, women's department directors, youth group directors and members and fellow townsmen to reduce the burden of our association.
In the second half of the 1970s, the association actively carried out various activities. In addition to forming a liaison committee among members from various places to strengthen contacts, other activities such as the Lion Dance Troupe, martial arts classes, youth group, women's department, choir and dance group all launched colorful activities.
1978 - 1981
1978At the end of the year, our chairman, Dato’ Yap Peng Sheung, noticed that the main tomb of our association had been in disrepair for a long time, so he initiated the grand move of rebuilding the main tomb. He first invited a Feng Shui master and a famous expert to conduct an investigation, and then the famous engineer of our association, Qiu Weitian, drew up a plan and selected an auspicious day to start the reconstruction.January 18, 1979The mausoleum was completed and the grand opening ceremony was held on the 26th day of the first lunar month in 1979. The entire fund for the reconstruction of the main mausoleum was donated by Dato’ Yap Peng Sheung and enthusiastic executive committee members and assistants, which can be said to be of immeasurable merit.
1976During this period, the chairman, Dato Yap Peng, and the executive committee members all agreed that it was not a long-term plan for the association's various activities to be funded by donations from members and fellow townsmen. The three properties owned by the association are located in the downtown area. If they can be rebuilt, they will surely earn generous rents. By then, the association will not only be self-sufficient in daily expenses, association activities, taxes, etc., but will also be able to support education and social welfare.
The reconstruction work was carried out in two steps. First, the old industrial shops on Harmony Street and Law Street were rebuilt, and then the main building of the association on Petaling Street was rebuilt.
The two properties at 97 Harmony Street and 6 Law Street are located atNovember 30, 1980 and April 26, 1983The second step of the reconstruction plan is to rebuild the five-storey old building of the Association's clubhouse located on Petaling Street into a modern 13-storey commercial and office building. The top floor is the Association's auditorium, conference hall and office, etc. The total construction cost is estimated to be more than 10 million yuan.
As the cost of building a new building is huge and beyond the ability of our association to bear, in order to find a solution to the construction cost source, Dato Yap Ping proposed to establish Hui Lian Holdings Co., Ltd. to collect funds from fellow countrymen all over Malaysia, to finance the construction of our building through leasing, and at the same time to enter the industrial and commercial fields to improve the economic level of our clan.
Dato' Yap Ping's initiative received enthusiastic support from fellow countrymen all over Malaysia. Hui Lian Holdings LimitedJune 2, 1981The first organizing meeting was held and the association was officially established. In a short period of time, it raised more than 18 million yuan. After several rounds of negotiations, the association's reconstruction committee and Huilian Holdings Co., Ltd. reached an agreement.
1985 - 1992
The Executive Committee of the AssociationAugust 25, 1985A special general meeting of all members was held. At the meeting, the majority of members agreed to authorize the Executive Committee to sign a 60-year lease contract with Huilian Holdings Co., Ltd. for the Huizhou Association Building. The company spent more than 18 million yuan to build a new 13-story building for the association to obtain a bank loan, and the company paid 10,000 yuan in rent to the association every month. After the building was completed, it paid 20,000 yuan in rent to the association every month. The relocation fee of more than 400,000 yuan for the original tenants was paid by Huilian Holdings. On the other hand, Huilian Holdings purchased a section of government land adjacent to the association's land from the city government on behalf of the association, totaling 2,335 square feet, increasing the area of the association's land from the original 15,000 square feet to 18,000 square feet, greatly expanding the association's building area.
Huilian HoldingsNovember 3, 1985Construction of the Association Building commenced.August 8 of the following yearWhen the foundation of the building had been dug 40 feet underground, a serious cooperative crisis suddenly broke out in our country. The Huilian Cooperative, headed by Datuk Yap Ping, was also affected and was frozen by the authorities. As a result, the construction fee could not be paid and the construction of the building was forced to stop.
Soon after the building construction was suspended, water accumulated tens of feet deep on the ground floor, causing many sequelae.February 14, 1987Resigned from the position of President of the Association and Director of Huilian Holdings.March 6, 1987Appointed as the managing director of Huilian Holdings.
After taking office, Engineer Yau immediately put aside his personal business and devoted himself to handling the business of Huilian Holdings and trying to save the construction project of the Association's building. It took him a total of three years and eight months of precious time.
As the water level at the construction site of our building reached 40 feet (about 6 million gallons) and sewage from the surrounding drains was flowing in, the neighboring businesses, out of panic and anxiety, jointly complained to the Urban Council. After receiving the complaint, the mayor personally inspected the site and held a meeting with the heads of eight departments of the Urban Council. The water must be pumped out immediately. The Association must hire a truck to transport the building to a suitable location to dump it, and at the same time build a mud retaining wall and fill the foundation of the building with sand. If this order is implemented, the Association will be forced to suffer huge losses.
Engineer Yau also pointed out that the walls surrounding the basement of the Association Building were built by a German construction company using the most advanced technology. They are stable and safe, and the pool water acts as a pressure balance on them and cannot be removed at will. During this period, Huilian Holdings no longer had sufficient working cash, and the various fines and entertainment expenses incurred by the construction site of the Association Building were initially mostly paid by the directors themselves.
March 27, 1988, the Association held a special general meeting of members at the Federal Hotel in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the resumption of construction of the new building of the Association and the by-election of three property trustees. The meeting was chaired by the Association Advisor, Dr. Lai Guanfu, as the Speaker, and passed by a majority of 108 votes (545 votes in favor and 437 votes against) to authorize the property trustee of the Association to sign a 43-year lease agreement with Huilian Holdings Co., Ltd., for the company to lease the land of the Association located in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur, to build a new 11-storey building. At the same time, the company was approved to use the above land as collateral to obtain a bank loan of 70% of the total construction cost of the building, and the loan together with interest must be repaid within 15 years. The meeting also elected three property trustees, namely (1) Yip Ping-sang, (2) Yip Kuan-sheng and (3) Lee Loi-fook.
As direct mortgage of the building's land was too risky, Engineer Yau Wai-tin and Dr. Chu Kwai-fuk and others studied other safer methods to ensure that the Association's building could be resumed as soon as possible without taking any risks. Among them, the joint venture method was a suggestion that was seriously considered.
In order to resume construction of the Association’s building, Engineer Qiu Weitian and Dr. Zhu Guifu worked tirelessly to look for interested investors to participate in the investment and construction of the Association’s building. However, due to too many unfavorable factors, they suffered repeated setbacks and failed.
After continuous efforts, Huilian Holdings finallyEarly 1988We have received the interest from Guangxing Group to participate in the joint venture investment to build the new building of our club. Huilian Holdings wrote to our association about the plan to invest in the joint venture to build the new building of our club. Our association held a general meeting on August 21, 1988, at which the joint venture plan of Huilian Holdings was accepted and the following resolutions were made:
(1) Approval was given to Hui Lian Holdings to lease the land located at Lot No. 110 to 115 and PT2 in District 20 of Kuala Lumpur, with title deed number CT11013 to 11018 and HS (D) 50340 (the current site of the Association’s building) in a joint venture to build a new eleven-storey commercial building (later named the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Huizhou Association Building) for a period of forty-three years.
(ii) Hui Lian Holdings and its associates (hereinafter referred to as the Lessees) are not allowed to use the perpetual title to the above-mentioned land as collateral to obtain loans from banks or financial institutions. The Lessees can only use the 43-year lease right to obtain financing.
(3) Upon expiration of the lease term, the lessee shall return to the Association the full ownership of all the above-mentioned titles together with the relevant land, buildings and all equipment therein.
Other terms, such as the monthly rent repayment of HK$10,000 to the Association during the construction period and the monthly rent repayment of HK$20,000 after the completion of the project, as well as the conditions that the lessee is responsible for repaying land tax, house number tax, etc. during the lease period and providing free elevator services to the Association, are the same as the lease conditions of the former Huilian Holdings. However, some new arrangements have been made for the rent adjustment procedure during the lease period.
After everything was ready, Huilian Holdings and Guangxing Group formed Huilian Guangxing Co., Ltd. According to the resolution passed by the general meeting of members of this association (21/8/1988),On October 18, 1988Signed a lease agreement with the Association and resumed construction of a new building for the Association at a cost of no less than HK$18 million.
When the project reached the sixth floor reserved for the association's use, the engineering design of the crossbeams and columns of the stage in the association's auditorium could not be resolved. Engineer Qiu designed it himself and solved the problem. At the same time, with the strong support of the association's executive committee, the height was increased to 30 feet, which can be used for various purposes and rented out to people.
The building project of our association was completed inOctober 20, 1989Resumption of work, andJune 22, 1992Obtained a temporary occupation permit. When both parties signed the contract, they stated that the construction period was 36 months. However, due to various problems, it took a long time to solve them, resulting in the new building project being delayed for eight months before completion.
1992 - 1994
The Association117thThe leaders of the Executive Committee insisted on their position and carried out the work step by step to restore and develop the affairs of the Association, winning the praise of the members and fellow townsmen. Whether it was the Spring and Autumn Festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala, the Respect for the Elderly Party, the New Year's Party, the charity for the poor, the awarding of scholarships and other activities, they all received enthusiastic support from members and fellow townsmen from all over the country.
In the118thIn the general election, all the members of the previous executive committee and the candidates they recommended were elected as the 118th executive committee. The 118th executive committee actively used computers to process the applications for membership and re-registration of members. At the same time, it redesigned the membership form, member re-registration form and new member card, bringing the association into the computer-operated era.
No.118thAll the groups under the Executive Committee have launched or drafted activity plans to provide services for members. The newly established senior group, under the guidance of famous teachers, has started choral practice, so that elderly or retired members can get beneficial activities. The Mid-Autumn Festival Gala and New Year's Party organized by the Youth Group of the Association have received strong support from members.
To help raise funds for the renovation of the auditorium, the Women's Group of our associationNovember 6, 1994The charity performance of the "Yunnan Ethnic Song and Dance Troupe of China" was held in the association's auditorium and received widespread support; and the ballroom dance classes currently being conducted by the women's group also received a good response.
At present, the Women's Group has formulated a series of activities to strengthen the participation of women's group members in the activities of the association. As for the renovation group, the sound insulation panels on both sides of the hall and the enclosure on the seventh floor have been added to make the hall more perfect for use. The Standing Committee is currently actively classifying and preserving the historical relics, books and collections of the association for the reference of future generations.
In order to strengthen the friendship and connection between members and fellow countrymen at home and abroad, the leaders of the association not only actively participated in the activities of the Huizhou Association of Malaysia, but alsoMid-1992We organized a delegation to visit the Huizhou Association of Singapore and the Medan Goose City Charity Foundation of Indonesia.April 15, 1994We sent representatives to attend the first World Huizhou Hometown Reunion held in Singapore. Our Youth Group also participated in the preparations for the reunion and made a certain contribution to the success of the conference.
In order to let our members know more about the development of Huizhou in China in recent years,November 11-16, 1993During the period, the "Huizhou Economic Investigation Team" was organized to visit various places in Huizhou. During the investigation in Huizhou, the team received warm hospitality and detailed explanations from the Huizhou Municipal People's Government, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, and leaders of the business community. They were also given souvenirs, etc. All members benefited greatly and left a deep impression. The large-scale Huizhou West Lake ink painting jointly presented to our association by the Huizhou Municipal People's Government, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the Huizhou Songshan Development Corporation has been framed and installed on the wall of the sixth-floor auditorium of our association for all members and fellow townsmen to appreciate.
June 11, 1995The Guangdong Cemetery delegation in Kuala Lumpur visited our association and donated 10,000 dollars to our hall renovation fund. Since the renovation of our main cemetery in 1979 led by the then president Dato Yap Peng, it has been slightly damaged. To symbolize the association's joy and unity with all fellow countrymen, the 118th Executive Committee decided to repair and beautify the main cemetery.July 11, 1995Construction started onOctober 29After the completion of the construction, the city has a brand new look.
1995 - 2001
The opening ceremony of the new building and the 131st anniversary celebration of the association were held onNovember 12, 1995At 10am, we invited our Deputy Finance Minister, Dato’ Huang Sihua, to preside over the unveiling ceremony. When he arrived, he was warmly welcomed by our president, Engineer Qiu Weitian, vice president, Dr. Zhu Guifu, He Rixin, standing committee members, the Lion Dance Troupe, and the Brass Band. The drums and music were loud and lively, and the public gathered to watch. After the Deputy Finance Minister, Dato’ Huang Sihua, presided over the unveiling ceremony at the elevator door on the ground floor of our new building, he was accompanied by the president, vice president, and standing committee members of our association and took the elevator to the sixth floor auditorium. When they entered the auditorium, they were warmly applauded by members and fellow townsmen.
The chairman of the conference, Engineer Qiu Weitian, gave a speech. He hoped that the members would not forget the hardships of the predecessors in building the hall, and should start from the past and unite as one to make full use of the existing facilities of the hall to carry forward the association. The president of the Huizhou Association of Ma Huizhou, Mr. Luo Meisheng, the president of Xuehuatang, Mr. Wu Defang, and Mr. Tian Yeru, the vice mayor of Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, China, were also invited to give speeches to the conference. They all spoke encouragingly and wisely, which benefited the fellows a lot.
The conference invited the Deputy Treasurer, Dato Huang Sihua, to deliver the opening speech. He first congratulated the association, under the leadership of the president, Engineer Qiu Weitian, the board of directors and members, for their unity and spirit of collective wisdom and overcoming many difficulties to build the new building. He hoped that the fellows of the association would continue to carry forward this great spirit for the benefit of future generations. He also hoped that the Huizhou fellows in the country would expand their social, business and investment fields, and exchange with overseas fellows in all aspects, strengthen bilateral relations, and promote mutual prosperity and progress through the principle of mutual benefit.
Amid the sound of majestic drums, our association invited Deputy Treasurer Dato’ Huang Sihua and 180 enthusiastic fellow villagers to jointly preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Thus, the opening ceremony of our new building was successfully completed in a grand and solemn atmosphere and witnessed by guests, fellow villagers and members from home and abroad, adding a glorious page to the history of our association.
During his tenure as president, Zhu Guifu also served as the president of the Huizhou Federation of Malaysia.November 2001In 2012, our association hosted the 4th World Huizhou Friendship Conference, which was held grandly in Genting. The chairman of the organizing committee was Ye Qing and the treasurer was Du Hanguang. With the full support of all directors, we invited the then Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir to be the guest of honor for cutting the ribbon. A total of 1,500 representatives from 12 countries attended the conference, which was an unprecedented success.
During his tenure as president, Ho Ri-sin successfully re-started the scholarship program that had been suspended for many years. In addition, he also initiated a fundraising campaign of one million RMB to donate to the "Bi Yan Building" of the Ye Ah Loi Former Residence Museum in Huizhou, to renovate and convert it into the Overseas Chinese Museum, and received generous donations from fellow villagers and fellow countrymen from all over the country.
When Dato’ Ng Kok Keong was the president, he went through a lot of hardships and through legal means to retrieve the mortgaged clubhouse title from the top management of CIMB Bank. He then changed the names of the four trustees to the name of the clubhouse. This was an arrangement made after the amendment of the Societies Act. However, there was a big problem. The government required a stamp duty of RM1.1 million to be paid when changing the trustees. So Dato’ Ng Kok Keong asked Lin Xiangcai, who was then the Deputy Minister of Finance, for help. Soon, he brought good news. The government issued an approval letter. The association only needed to successfully change the name of the trustee of the title deed with RM10. In addition, Dato’ Ng Kok Keong launched three fundraising activities during his term:
1. Sichuan Earthquake Relief Activities, raising RM150,000;

During the period when Xie Liming was the president, the association successfully transformed and sublet two old shops located on Luoye Street and Harmony Street to a new hotel. The new tenant invested heavily in the renovation and connected the two buildings with a pedestrian bridge, which not only increased the property value and brought stable rent to the association, but also regained the 20-foot house land that was lost when the building was rebuilt. Such a huge achievement was achieved without using a single cent of the association's funds.
